MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Strut
ford Borough Council was hold last evening. Present: Tiie A!ayor (Air \\ . P. K w'k wood), Crs. X. •!. King, I. Lawson, R. AlcK. Aiorison, .1. I). Mealy, J. AlcAllister, •). Boon, S. Ward, C. Sangster, and '!. Paget. Corrcspcndsnca. Tiie Secretary of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company wrote as follows: —“We have to inform you that the Company intends to charge the higher price for current for the Town Hall, and that the notice contained in the Company’s last letter was given so that the Council could protect itself when making arrangements with, its lessees/’ Cm King moved that a committee consisting of the .Mayor anti Crs. V. arc! and Peon be sec up to consider the matter with the Electrical Supple Company. Cr. Healy moved, as an amendment, that no action be taken, seeing that the Hall was not leased in an\ shape or form. The amendment was carried. The Rev. W. A. Butler, Scoutmaster, wrote, asking permission to construct a miniature rifle range on the \ fcarago grounds, for the use of the Boy Scouts. A committee consisting of the Maym and Cr. King was deputed to deal with the matter. Mi T. H. Penn was appointed a member of the Assessment Court, in accordance with section 13 (3) of tm Valuation of Land Act, 1908, to act on behalf of the Stratford Boioug. Council, in connection wi:\vtli the revaluing of the Stratford District by the valuation department.
Mrs Helen Brown wrote as follows “As 1 am shortly vacating the lease i hold from your Council, and in view of the fact that the promises are be ing used by the incoming tenant fm the same trade as that 1. am in, 1 tijjink the Council should eompensatf me for the improvements and alterations 1 have effected in the building; while 1 have held the lease. As you are aware, J built the kitchen at tin back of the shojl ,and the Council i; now reaping the benefit of these im provoments in the way of an increase! rental.” —Referred to the Reserves Committee. The Overseer has been instructed to inspect and report on all faulty drains in the borough, and also to take the necessary levels in connection with the proposed new tunnel at tm roadworks of the water supply. “3. Hamlet Street, near its junction with Pembroke Road, lias been repaired. DO cubic yards ov gravel have been stacked in Sc-’,ton Street and Hamlet Street for winter use. Metal patching has been done 01: Broadway, Teuton Street, Opur.aKe Road, Brecon Road, Falstah Street, Scyton Street, .Juliet and Regan Streets. A crossing lias been put in to Mr Asthury’s property on Juliet Street. A new culvert has been put in Celia Street, its junction with Juliet Street. A concrete pipe culvert has been put in Regan Street, at its junction with Swansea Road. i wo hundred and ninety-two cubic yards oi shingle have been carted from the Patea- River, «1 a cost of ‘2s 2d per yard. Report cp Juiist Street Central, “Re metalling Juliet Street Central to the watertable- on one side only. There is a surface area of 15,615 square feet of tins street unmetalled, between Fenton and Regan Streets on the east side. It will take 382 cubic yards of metal or shingle to put a depth of 3 inches on the unmetalled area. The report of the committee set up to interview Colonel Chaytor, re Drill Hall was as follows: —“We beg to report having interview Colonial Chaytor, hut were unable to gain any definite information. We beg to recommend that the committee meet Colonel Malone and Captain Dampen with a view to obtaining definite information as to the requirements of the Territorials, and the arftount the department will be prepared to pay for quarters.” The recommendation was adopted, and tiie Mayor and Crs. Paget and Healy wore appointed to represent the Council. > The reports were adopted, with the exception that the overseer’s special report was held over, and that clauses 11 and 12 of the Works Committee were deleted, the clauses to he considered in the preparing of the estimate*. Financial. The following is a statement of receipts and expenditure from 31-3-12 to 30-4-12:

Paget moved, according to notice :—that the resolution passed at •i special meeting on March 19th, letting the' Town Hall to Messrs Mercer ' and Drake for skating, he rescinded.” Cr. Sangslel - seconded the motion, 'which was, lost. Cr. Boon moved “That the following words ho added to resolution passed at a special meeting on 19th March, letting the Town Hall to Messrs Mercer and Drake for skating, the Hall not to he lot to any other person or persons fof skating, and that they remove and replace the forms as reel aired.” An amendment was moved by Cr. Paget, seconded by Cr. Hard, “that the Rail he only let to other persons for private skating at the ordinary tariff, and Mercer and Drake; to be compensated to the extent ol 10s, and that it he let to private persons on afternoons at the same rate as let to Messrs Mercer and Drake on the afternoons not used by thorn.” this was lost and the motion earned.
