An accommodation house at Pdhue, owned and occupied by H. Eodley, together with a. bakehouse, a billiard room and several detached buildings was totally destroyed by fire at an .early hour this morning. A bucket brigade saved the stables containing a large quantity of feed. Insurances: Main building £IOO, furniture £l6O, store £OOO, stock £075. billiard tables £2OO, bakehouse £SO, equally divided between the Norwich Union and British Dominion offices. Westport, ‘May 18. John Lenihan, aged 35, fireman on the Waipori, who recently signed on the vessel at Auckland, committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. Deceased suffered from insomnia. Auckland, May 13. The. Chinese concerned in the raid were before the Police Court and wore remanded til! Monday. The money in their possession totalled £llO. Wanganui, May 13. The convent which was erected hero and which cost £20,000 was opened yesterday by Archbishop Redwood in the presence of several thousand people. The collection realised £193. The tramways made a profit for the year of £360. A further section 1 of five miles to the sea at the heads ifj almost completed and will be opened in a few months.
