ARXST v. BARRY. By Electric Telegraph-Copyright. United Press Association. London, May 8. The Sportsman states that Arnst is not receiving due courtesy. Barry’s supports have not yet named the date to isign the articles. The challenge Arnst had accepted had in no way been encumbered by the reservation of Barry not to sign until the money was found. Between £250 and £3OO has now been received, and the signing of the articles would greatly help the fund. ROUGH FOOTBALL. , Wellington, May 8. The Wellington Rugby Union’s Management Committee this evening suspended T. Rapson, of the Athletic team, for twelve months, for striking an opponent in the match against Petone last Saturday. Rapson denied that he hit the man, hut the referee stated that he did and character!sd the incident as a very deliberate and foul one. Rapson said that whilst a player was forcing his way through: other players after a Lnc-out he (Rapson) placed one of his hands on the man’s chin and shoved him back. Regret was expressed that the Management Committee members in Wellington had not the power to report oases of roughness, as could be done in Otago. The chairman (Mr E. 0. Hales) said that the New Zealand Union had absolutely upset the rule. Last year a man was reported by the Otago Union for roughness, hut the decision was overruled by the New Zealand Union, and also by the appeal committee. It was resolved to write to chilis requesting their assistance in suppressing rough play. HOCKEY. A meeting of delegates to the Taranaki Hockey Association was hold at New Plymouth last evening, there being present:—Messrs Ralph (Waitara) in the chair, Harris (Inglewood), Burdekin (Eltham and Hawera), Avery (Kaponga). The headquarters of the association were fixed for New Plymouth, an Eltham motion to have them transferred to Stratford being negatived. It was decided to hold meetings of delegates alternately at New Plymouth and Eltham. Mr J. E. Avery was re-elected ihon. secretary. The secretary was asked to communicate with the Now Zealand Association, asking them to permit Taranaki to play Wellington for the challenge shield on July 20, and that the association ho also asked to consider the challenge of Taranaki against Manawatu for the Norden Shield on July 24. The second round will commence on June 13, the grounds to be reversed. Southern Division. May 15.—Eltham v. Hawera, at Eltham; Kaponga a bye. May 23.—Kaponga v. Eltham, at Kaponga ; Hawera a bye.
