THE LATE MR WARDELL.

The “X./. Times” pays the following liio;li tribute to the late Mr Warded: — “The death of Mr H. S. Warded removes from our midst a gracious and stately figure, an accomplished gentleman, and a pioneer who gave to this country long years of faithful service in different capacities. Coming to New Zealand when the country was in a rough and primitive state, he experienced many hardships, travelled many thousands of miles of perilous roads by day and by night, and forded many unbridged rivers. But the thought of duty was ever uppermost in his mind, and he gave of his best ungrudgingly. As a magistrate he was revered, as a man of generous impulses, refined tastes, and broad catholic he was universally esteemed. The old settlers and their descendants hold him very dear, and In's nobility of mein and great strength of character won from the Maoris the reverence always associated in their minds with the mana of chieftainship.

To tin’s attribute may bo ascribed his influence tor peace at a time when it became necessary for Tim to place his life in peril in negotiation with the rebels of the race. In the roll of fame the name of Herbert Samuel Warded will be inscribed as one of New Zealand’s finest patriots and noblest pioneers.”
