Gunn 1 for 16. The weather was warm and cloudy, and the- attendance at the opening small. The pitch was soft, but is dry-, ing. Jones won the toss and sent the visitors in. Wass and Riley opened the attack. Tie first over yielded four byes. The first wickets fell at 28, Bardsley being dismissed by a brilliant singlehanded catch by Jones at second slip. Macartney followed. The bowling was of uncertain length the batsmen seizing favourable chances. At 2£ Gregory rot leg before to T r-?-
monger, he was 70 minutes at the wickets. His timing was unequal. He was missed when 28 at deep point by Jones off Wass. Two for 77—Macartney 24. Minnett filled the vacancy. The century appeared after 85 minutes. Macartney readied 50 in 70 minutes. After getting going he showed free cricket, pulling and off driving. The partnership was ended by Iremouger smartly catching Minnett at point. He was badly missed when four at short leg by Riley off Iremongcr. Three for 122—Macartney 51. Macartney and Mayne carried the score to 16G. The former lost his wicket through hitting across to Riley. He was 115 minutes at the wickets. His was an admirable, stylish, chanceless innings. He hit eleven fourers. Macartney lasted for five minutes under two hours. Four wickets were drawn for 166, but after that the batting fell aw«,y. Mayne played a full innings of 19 and Matthews a quiet one of 26 and Whitty hit three fourers off his first f»verj but outside Macartney the batting was below expectations. The innings lasted 230 minutes. Notts' bowling and fielding was only moderate at the start but improved later on as the wicket was drying and, played easily. About 4000 were present. When Notts wont in Hazlitt and Whitty were the first pair of bowlers. Both put on pace and byes went to the boundary off each in the first two overs. Jones and G. Gunn were the batsmen. The former was yorked by Hazlitt at 23. The bowlers then changed ends and Hardstaff was smartly stumped at 30. The light at this stage was bad; J. Gunn followed. At 38 MacLaren relieved Whitty. Hazlitt was awkward to play and the fielding was good. G. Gunn, after taking 70 minutes to compile 22, was bowled in MacLaren's second over, attempting to glance him, and Payton was immediately caught at point. Four wickets for 55, but J. The South Africans started badly, Morton dismissing Strieker and Fulkner when only two runs had been scored. When stumps were drawn the visitors were .thirteen runs behind with three wickets to fall.
