Two Turkish attempts to recover Lebba on Thursday night were repulsed with heavy losses. ENFILADING THE TURKS. Rome, May 6. A squadron, composed of the Vit'tovio Emanuele, Regina Elene, Napoli and Roma, left Samphalia on Friday, with lights out, and proceeded at halfspeed to the Island of Cliarki, ten miles west of Rhodes. Another squadron followed, conveying landing forces of 8000. All were concentrated by 2 a.m., arriving at Rhodes at 3.30. A section of the fleet made a demonstration in the harbour, and another •section guarded the disembarkation of the troops in a bay eight miles south of the town. The Turkish troops did not appear. The warships did not fire a shot. The Turks withdrew to a plateau five miles south-west of Rhodes, where Admiral Amenglin immediately at- j tacked them, in order to prevent their j withdrawing to the centre of the island. There were several bayonet charges by the Italians. Five men were wounded. Fifty Turkish prisoners were taken. The Turks arc now on a small peninsula on the north of the island. The warships arc able to co-operate by enfilading both flanks. WAS THE TEXAS FIRED ON? Smyrna, May 5. The survivors of the wreck of the Texas corroborate the statement that she was sunk by shells from the forts. The Turks refused to allow the American Consul to send divers to explore the wreck. A HIGH-HANDED PROCEEDING. London, May 6. Despite the opposition of the Greek and American Consuls at Smyrna, thej captain of the Texas has been forcibly j removed from the Greek hospital to; a Turkish prison infirmary. He is accused of spying on Italy's behalf. The American Ambassador has sent! the commander of an American guardship to Smyrna. j
