QUEENSLAND ELECTIONS.
VERY KEEN CONTESTS IN ALL ELECTORATES.
A LIBERAL VICTORY
Brisbane, April 28. The elections -were' keenly contested, the polling being exceptionally heavy. The returns are- incomplete, but a substantial Liberal'Vctory is assured. The Queensland election figures showthat the Liberals are' leading in 45 electorates',' Labourites in 24, and Independents ; in,three. In the Inst Par-, liament the figures respectively were: 41, 26, and 5. All the Ministers are leading comfortably. The return of Mr. Bowman, leader of the Labour Party, is assured, and Mr. Coyne, leader of the late strike, is also in flf strong position. NOTICEABLE FEATURES. Brisbane, April 29. The latest figures are:—Liberals 43, Labour 27,, Independent 2. The most noticeable features of the election are the Labourites' sweeping the metropolitan area, the centre of the late strike. Brisbane North and Brisbane each voted for Labour for the first tme, with majorities of 37 and 55 respectively.' The Downs bunch were more strongly Liberal than ever before the redistribution of electorates. Charters Towers, hitherto an unassailable Labour stronghold, resulted in the dismissal of one Labourite. PROTECTINGTJFIE WORKERS. (Received 29, 9.30 a.m.) Brisbane, April 29. Mr. Denham, interviewed with regard to the elections, said that Queensland declared for industrial peace and Parliamentary government. It would be the Government's business to protect the workers against needless and wanton interruption of work.
