(Per Press Association;.) Auckland, April 24. The Harbour Board carried a resolution to include in the 1912 Empowering Bill a clause giving the Board power to acquire and control ferry services at this port. The chairman (Mr Gunson) explained that the Board had recently had considerable trouble with the ferry companies. Though large sums were expended in their interests the companies were dissatisfied. Experience led him to conclude that the time had come when the Beard should acquire permissive legislation to take over the ferries, as the municipalities had resumed tramways. Mr Alison, manager of the Dcvonport Ferry Co., and Mr Bradnoy, ALP., strongly opposed the motion hut were the only dissentients. Auckland, April 24. Dan Thomas Grubb, 45, fell when alighting from a moving train at Henderson and his injuries proved fatal. Wellington, April 24. The Railway Appeal Board dismissed the appeals of G. Benefield, cadet, Wanganui; A. J. McPherson, cadet, Wellington; P. MeKoown, clerk, Auckland; and W. IT. Old, clerk, Aramoho. The dispute filed by the Wellington Grocers’ Union came before the Conciliation Council to-day. No agreement was arrived at. The matter will be referred to the Arbitration Court. Dr. McArthur, of the Railway Appeal Board, dismissed the appeal of W. Thompson, stationmastor, Greytown, against his position on the classification list on the ground that the General Manager had not given the certificate which was a necessary prelude to promotion. Dr McArthur held that there was no power to cornin’) Ihe General Manager to give a certificate. That might mean that the classification was not worth tjie paper it was written on. He might he wrong, but he thought the remedy, if any, lay in getting regulations. The lay members of the Board dissented, considering; the appeal should ho sustained. The decisions will he forwarded to the Minister.
