(Received 20. 10.45 a.m.) Constantinople, April 19. Four battleships, accompanied by 22 torpedo boats, opened lire on tho outei forts at 8000 yards. Ihe forts replied. Merchantmen were allowed to proceed northward, the Turkish mine-laving siiips completely closing the straits. The British subjects embarked on a steamer. The fleet fired 180 projectiles but did not seriously damage the 'oarracks or forts. One Italian vessel took the fire of the fleet and put to sea. The Governors of Mitylcne and Rhodes ronort that two Italian sires shelled the barracks above Vathe lor three and a half boars.
.Parliament has opened. The Sultan, referring to the war, declared that peace was only possible on condition of the effective maintenance of Turkey’s sovereign rights. He applauded the bravery of the Turks and Arabs.
