LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Mr 11. Spence, who has been in Wellington for a week attending a., counsel at the Court of Appeal, returned to Stratford by last evening s express. Mr. J. McAllister was nominated for the Stratford Mayoralty by Messrs. S. H. Janies, A. W. Reid, X. J. Kmg, T. H. Penn, Geo. Burgess, and J. McCluggago.
Yesterday it was somewhat a novelty to hear string band on the showground—a pleasing novelty it might he added. The Stratford Orchestral Society played some very line selections during the day, and the opinion was expressed on all sides that the innovation was a most successful one. Bv a printer’s error in our issue of yesterday Mr. P. Skoglund was made to appear to have said that he did “not” tell Mr. Drake that he thought it was understood by the Council that the hall was not to he lot to any other person! for skating. The word “not should have been omitted. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. Yv. G . K. Keurick, S.M., C. Lovett was charged with a breach of a prohibition order. He pleaded guilty, and was lined 40s and 7s costs. Accused was given seven days in which to pay, the_ alternative being fourteen days in New I lymouth gaol.
At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. \V. G. K. Kenrick, S.M., judgment by default was entered in the following civil C'ase^.—B. Darkness (Mr Wright) v. A. At the meeting of the Fire Brigade Delegates, held yesterday evening, the advisability of holding the first demonstration at Stratford, was tentatively suggested. It seems, however, that' under the present conditions, it is impossible to hold it in this town, as the brigade has only the street supply for practice or competitive purposes. The remedy for this would be the continuance of the 4in. main m Cordelia Street to Victoria_ Park. Pc is.to be hoped that our; .brigade will approach the Council with regard to this matter, As it would be a great pity if Stratford missed the opportunity of iiavino- the first demonstration of the Taranaki Fire Brigades held here. /The passengers, enginedriver, and guard on the slow strain from W iipu kurau to Palmerston bad i ather, a startling experience on the rr.or nng of April 9th. When the tram had passed the Mangatera, Viaduct, on the other side of Dannevirke, the enginedriver noticed the body of a .woman King on the side of the line, and after some trouble managed to draw the guard s attention to it. The train was then pulled up, but by this time the body was left well behind. The guard went hack-expecting to find a corpse but found, instead, that someone had been playing a lark, as it turned out to be a dummy dressed in woman’s clothes. The guard took it back to the train, and passing the'first gully threw it in.
