BIG STEAMER SUNK.
COLLIDES WITH AN ICEBERG IN THE ATLANTIC. GOOD USE OF WIRELESS. New York, April 15. The steamer Titanic, inward bound to New York, from Southampton, communicated by wireless telegraph? that she had collided with an iceberg and asking for urgent help. The liner Virginia is hastening to the aid of the wrecked vessel. THREE THOUSAND SOULS ON • BOARD. London, April 15. The Titanic was off Cape Race, at the south-cast extremity of Newfoundland, when she collided in the dark with an iceberg. . The steamer telegraphs wirelessly that she is sinking by the head, and that the women are being taken on in the boats first. , The doomed steamer has a complement of three thousand passengers, and crew. The Titanic left Southampton on Wednesday, and was making her first voyage across the Atlant:c. DISTINGUISHED PASSENGERS (Received 16, 9.5 a.m.) "," '' i London, April 15. Ismay, of Ismay, linrie and Company (White Star Line). Colonel J. Astor, j and several New York bankers. ' PASSENGERS LEAVE THE SHIP. (Received 16, 9.5 a.m.) Halifax. April 10. All the passengers left the Titanic at three o'clock this morning. A BIG ICE-FIELD. (Received 16, 10 a.m.) London, April 15. Various liners have recently encountered an ice-field a hundred milcr long, by thirty-five miles broad, near New Foundland Grand Banks, and had perilous voyages. ■ The liner Niagara twice had holes broken in her, and other vessels also sustained damage. The Montreal Star states that the Titanic is steaming slowly to Halifax.
