ALLEGED BETTING FRAUD.

What is known as the telegraph fraud' case concluded .at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Edmund John Walsh and John Vernon Binley were charged with conspiracy to defraud Scott and Martindale and Boss and Bradshaw, by means of racing telegrams alleged to have been altered by Binley, before transmission, he being an official in the telegraph office. There were also two charges, each of attempting to obtain money from the firms mentioned by false pretences. The accused were committed for trial at the next Supreme Court sittings in Blenheim. Counsel admitted the evidence in the latter charges as being the same as in the conspiracy charge. On a further charge of obtaining from Scott and Martindale certain monies by means of false pretences with intent to defraud, against Binley only, counsel would not admit the evidence, and Inspector Ellison adduced evidence’ in support of the charge. Walsh, put in the box, declined to give evidence, on counsel’s advice, as it might incriminate him. The magistrate said it was for the court to say if it would protect the witness or compel him to give evidence. The case was adjourned until next day.
