A SUBSTITUTE FOR RUBBER.

Professor Ostromislensky, of Moscow University, has solved the problem, long pending, of the production on a commercial basis of artificial rubber by chemical synthesis, says the St. Petersburg correspondent of the "Standard." He has sold his secret to a syndicate of' capitalists, who are now erecting an experimental factory. The method, it is said, produces the purest rubber at a nominal cost from, materials native to, Hitherto heat has been used to produce the necessary chemical changes, but : Professor Ostromislensky employs ultra-violet rays from a quartz lamp. The product is claimed to have all the qualities of best rubber, but is too pure for ordinary commercial uses,, requiring adulteration before use. Hard fine Para rubber now fetches 4s 7jd per lb. The new substance is to cost about Is Sj|d per lb.
