Messrs Parker, Lamb, and Co.’s timber mill at Freeman’s Bay was burnt to the ground last night, as was also Bryant’s coal and firewood yard, including a two-storey building containing machinery. Parker, Lamb and Co. are .insured for £2OOO in the Guardian office. The damage is estimated at £SOOO. Bryant 'is insured for £350 and the damage is estimated at £BSO. Palmerston, March 24. Mr Stagpoolc, late headmaster of the Linton school, whose appeal against the Wanganui Education Board was recently dismissed, was entertained by the people of Linton and presented with a purse of sovereigns. The steamer Opawa went out in search, but returned to port this afternoon reporting that nothing had been seen of the Energy. Taihape, March 25. Just before midnight on Saturday a fire broke out in a block of building's opposite the Post Office, Raetihi, resulting in the destruction of the premises of Loveday and Co., drapers, Stubbs, ironmonger, Bennett’s tearooms, Booth’s billiard room, and Goodyer’s livery stables. The brigade was unable to use it's engine ceding to short water supply, but excellent service was rendered by a bucket 'brigade, whereby the adjoining block, was saved. A large amount of Loveday’s stock and most of Stubbs’ was saved, also contents of the stables. The insurances are not available. Auckland, March 25. . The inquest on the body of Thomas Fernley, aged 40 years, evidence was given by a witness who stated that deceased was a ship’s pantryman but formerly a registered medical practitioner in London. He called to sec Fernley at the Salvation Army Home. Fernley put out his hand as if to shake hands but fell back suddenly and expired immediately. Wellington, March 25. The Appeal Court opened to-day with Judges Williams, Dennistou, Edwards, Chapman and Sim on the bench. There was a large attendance of counsel. The list contains twentythree oases, besides two Full Court cases.- The morning was devoted to settling the order of hearing.
