HARBOUR BOARD ELECTIONS. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, March 19. Commenting on the cost of elections, Mr. Fletcher, Chairman of the Harbour Board, yesterday, in making his annual statement, said that under recent legislation the constitution of the Board had been altered, the number of members had been increased to fourteen, .and the elections proved much more costly, the last election costing £979 6s sd, compared with £BS 5s in 1906, £l4£ 15s 5d in 1908, and £157 4s 3d in 1910. In order to lessen the cost the Harbours Conference sent resolutions to the Minister of Marino, suggesting amendments to the Act, and hoping they woidd be given effect to before next election. SURVEYORS’ EXAMINATION. Wellington, March 19. The surveyors’ examination commenced yesterday, the examining members being Messrs. Strauchan, Surveyor-General; Humphries, formerly Surveyor-General; Broderick, Chief Surveyor (Christchurch), Sladden (Wellington), and Harris (Auckland), the last two being the institute's nominees and the others Government nominees. There are twentysix candidates. MOUNTAINEERING. Timaru, March 19. Mr. S. Turner advises from the Hermitage that he successfully ascended Mount Sefton under winter conditions, a difficult climb, and obtained many fine photographs from the summit. W.C.T.U. CONVENTION. Dunedin, March 19. At the W.C.T.U. Convention this afternoon the following resolution was passed: “This convention urges all unions to secure better education of girls in domestic instruction.” It was also decided that the union set up a department of domestic science. It was reported that the expenditure in 1911 was £3453, exclusive of the organising fund.
