WORKERS'S DWELLINGS.
A PALMERSTON SCHEME. (Per Press Association.) Palmerston, starch 18. A good deal of delay has occurred in connection with the scheme to establish a settlement at Terraco End by tiie Advances to Workers Department. Intimation has now been received that the authorities are prepared to commence building, but the assurance has come so late and under such circumstances that it is likely that most, if not all of the prospective householders will withdraw from their engagements. A disappointing feature of the affair is that the estimates have turned out to be nowhere near the actual cost of the buildings. The experience of one local resident illustrates the inconvenience to which people have been put. In June last ho applied for a fourroomed .house to he erected on a section 60ft by 145 ft. He was told by the authorities that the cost of the building would be £285, to which had to be added £75 for the section and a few pounds for administrative expenses. The applicant paid his deposit of £lO. IVow the Department has intimated that the cost of a fourroomed dwelling would bo £371, the total, ineluding land and expenses, being £-158 7s.
