NEW SOUTH WALES MINERS

All tho mines in the Newcastle and Maitland districts worked the afternoon shift. The union officials state they arc unwilling to prejudice their case by precipitate action, and will continue to work until the conference is over. It is generally considered that tho afternoon shift will soon he abolished, however, when the conference ends.
UNSKILLED LABOUR SCARCE
Gisborne, March 12
The various works at present in progress in Gisborne have practically absorbed the available supply of unskilled labour, and there is an unsatisfied demand for navvies, etc.
WATERSIDE WORKERS’
DEMANDS
Invercargill, March 12,
Although the Bluff Waterside Workers’ Union obtained a new award as 1 ate as last December, there still seems to ho considerable dissatisfaction existing among the men with regard to wages and conditions. A fresh demand has been framed, and was presented to the employers this afternoon. Representatives of the union and employers met in conference at the Trades Hall to discuss the situation. Tho union delegates wished the proceedings to be fully reported, and asked that the press he permitted to remain. This course was strenuously opposed by the employers, on the grounds that it was a private conference and that it would not he politic to publish the details of such, a conference. A deadlock was threatened, hut the reporters /saved the situation by retiring.

STRIKERS DISCHARGED

Four hundred navvies on the North Coast railway struck and were discharged. They objected to a ganger.

A serious split "amongst colliery proprietors on the question of the abolition of the afternoon shift is reported, a section favouring it.
