SWIMMING NOTES.

(By Ampin Bios.) The committee of the Swimming Club is to meet this evening to perfect arrangements lor Thursday’s carnival, though everything is at present in excellent train. The exceedingly cold snap on Sunday and Monday may have a disheartening effect on some swimmers, but with reasonably warm weather until Thursday the water should be warm enough to suit competitors, and tlie atmospheric conditions on the bank -sliouid be good enough to suit the most fastidious spectators. As a matter of fact, of course, the water in the hath is but little at fected by the temperature of the air. except in the case of very severe cold. In any case, it would surprise timid swimmers to find on, going in for a race that they would become sc “hot” on getting to the post first that they would forget to worrj about the cold water.

In fashioning Thursday’s programme the committee endeavoured as imicJi as possible to -make it as spectacular as possible. To this end there are contests foi boys and men off the springboard and tiie high stage, and some exhibition long diving will be given. But the racing section will not be altogether neglected. The 75yds distance for the Handicap Champion Cup will be swum, and, the competition being at such an interesting race. All the entrants can be expected to do the best they can.

The points for the cup now stand: Kell}' 7, Masters 6, Bennett 3, Kivel!

Masters will not be swimming, and the leader can bo expected to have a stiff task, so that the other men who have been swimming in the series can he looked to to make a special effort to got into the places. The final for the Schoolboys’ Cham pionship should also produce a good race, as the boys of Stratford have always displayed a keen desire to develop into crack swimmers. Tue races for ladies should prove interesting, and, altogether, it should only need a fine day to make the Bath Improvement Fund a considerable and un negligible quantity. Entries close to-night for a carnival to be held in Hawera on Thurdsay evening.
