(Per Press Association.) Wellington, March 9. At two o’clock this morning an eighteen-roomed boardinghouse in Syd-, ney Street, owned by Hamilton Gilmer and McGuire, occupied by Miss Elizabeth Newman, was completely gutted by fire. The outbreak was discovered by a boarder, 0. W. Exall, and he quickly roused the occupants, who just escaped in night attire. All the boarders lest all their belongings, Exall being slightly injured in an attempt to save some of his goods. Auckland, March 8. The Hon. J. A. Millar states that he has completed the preliminary work for tho removal of the engine-sheds at the Auckland railway station to Newmarket. This necessitates duplication of the Parnell railway tunnel. The Minister states it is now within measureablo distance. Tho sum of £BO,OOO has been authorised for tho combined' work;- -i ■ I tri'Dri/U U ('BC A fatal motor ear accident occurred at 5 o’clock this morning, and resulted in Mrs Prousa, of Mauganui, being killed, and Mrs Jordan, wife of Canon Jordan (Mayor of Taurauga) being seriously injured. Both ladies, who were sisters, were on a visit to relations. Tho ladies wore crossing the road at the time, when a motor car driven by Garnett Campbell came along and knocked them down, throwing Mrs Jordan aside and running over Mrs Proiise. Mrs Jordan sustained a broken arm, three broken ribs and a cut on the head, besides being severely bruised. She now lies in the hospital in a serious condition. Nelson, March 8. Miss Dora Hufram, schoolmistress at Pakawau, was found in an unconscious condition this morning and succumbed later, the cause being a paralytic seizure. Timaru, March 8. The committee which arranged the gift from the Dominion to the battleship New Zealand met this afternoon to consider a letter from the Admiralty inquiring whether, as the name of the ship which received the gifts had been changed to Zealandia and a new ship given by the Dominion was named New Zealand, the gifts should bo transferred to the latter. The committee decided to reply that they desired the transfer to bo made, but net until the expiry of the present commission of the Zealandia. Dunedin, March 8.
Mr Justice Williams gave judgment in the case, Dalgety and others, appellants, versus Commissioner of Taxes, an appeal from the decision of the Magistrate in over-ruling objections to their assessment of income for income tax purposes. The question was what were the profits derived by appellants from the holfling or occupation of Crown lands for the year ending 31st March, 1910, which was the last year that appellants carried on and during which they held a clearing sale. The judge held that the exception contained in the sub-section could not be constructed as an exception to proliibition from deduction. The appeal was dismissed with costs £lO. Eketahuna, March 9. Some apprehension lias been occasioned in Eketahuna through the disappearance of Mr R. J. McLean, the Eketahuna County Clerk. Mr McLean left home on Friday morning and was last seen about mid-day. As he did not return home a search party was organised and ns now out searching.
