SWIMMING NOTES.
’ I 't . . -U (By Am phi Bios.) ; ! ' » ■ l ■ 1 The 100yds distance of the Cham-' pion Cup series was swum yesterday in the presence of a fair number of spectators. .; I Masters (scr), Kelly (20sec), and Whittington (26sec) contested the first heat. The finish was tame, lying between Masters and Kelly, Whittington chaining French leave of absence at t 5 yards. 1 ’' He is apparently relying on being able to pull the Cup his way by good performances in the short races. However, ho has stuck well to the contest, and deserves to make points. The time was Imin 47iseo. Tilings were made to move somewhat faster in the second heat. Bennett (23sec) and Jebb (25sec) fought out (the preliminary stages of the race—perhaps too strenuously. Jebb saw the error of his ways (getting bustled, etc.) just before the 75yds turn, and Bennett and Kivcll (4sec) engaged in settling about the finish, which, naturally, was somewhat tame, Bennett getting first place. > As usual, Jebb stuck like a brick to his somewhat difficult task. When he contests open races and club races next year, he will feel the benefit of his consistent efforts in this year’s Cup series. The time was Imin 35sec. Kelly and Bennett swam together throughout the final, but Kelly lasted the better and gained'the’verdict by a touch. Bennett swam well, and showed that lie has the Swimmer’s Creed recently published in this column pasted inside his think-box with the buttered side up. The other heat winners were close up, Kivell getting third place. The journey occupied Imin 32 l-ssec. The points for the Cup now stand
Kelly 7 Masters ... ... 0 / Bennett ... ... 3 Kivell 2 This puts the Cup in an interesting position. The handicapper has apparently got tired of seeing Masters win so often, and set him something to do if ho desires to win. Bennett is keeping himself up to the mark all the time, and a win or two going his way would not surprise anybody, Kivell is also lying handy. He is in the pink of condition, and the closer handicapping which must naturally come will ho all in his favour. Ais to the leader, everybody else knows more about him than the abovesigned A.B. or anybody else. Tho next distance (75yds) is set down for Thursday next at tho afternoon carnival, when a good contest can be promised.
