TARANAKI TENNIS TOURNEY. (Pit Press Association.) Waverley, February 24. The tennis tournament was brought to a most successful conclusion this evening, splendid weather prevailing throughout the day. The finals fjaw some splendid play, no walk-over victories taking place. Results : Men’s Championship Singles. Semi-final.—A. Wallace beat R. Wybourne, 6—2, 6—4; Cliff Dickie beat C. J. Nicholson, 5—7, 6—3, 6—3. This was an extremely fine game, Nicholson playing a plucky losing game. The final between Wallace and Dickie will be played on Saturday. Mon’s Championship Doubles. Completion of second round: Dickie and Wallace beat Nicholson and Webster, 6—l, 6—2. The New Plymouth men were outclassed, but played a strenuous game. Nicholson was not quite up to form. Hunter and Wybourne beat F. Wallace and J. Daniell, I—6, 6—4, 7—5. Semi-final.—Dickie and Wallace beat PowdrelT Bros., 6—o, B—6; R, and M. Wybourne, beat M. Hunter and P. Wybourne, 13—11, 9—ll, 6—l, Final.—Dickie and Wallace beat Wybourne Bros., 6—3, 6—3. This was a great game, full of incident. Ladies’ Championship Singles. Completion of second round: Mrs Payne beat Miss Beckett, 6—l, 6—2 Final.—Miss Brewster beat Mrs Payne, 6—5,- 6—o. This proved" ar: easy victory for the New Plymouth lady,' who tired out her older oppoir ent. Miss Brewster retains the championship. , -;r - Ladies’ Championship Doubles. 1 Final.—-Mrs Payne and. Christchurch, February 24. At the athletic meeting held today under the auspices of the Canterbury centre of the N.Z.A.A.A., the one mile flat handicap was won by N. V. Hill (scr.),' in 4min 25 3-ssec, and the 100yds handicap by R. Opic (scr.), in lOsec, a very close finish. J. McHolm won the hammer throwing competition. His throw was 135 ft 8.1 in, heating the Australian record from a seven feet circle, of 132f1 2in. CANTERBURY REGATTA. Christchurch, February 24.
