A number of wholesale merchants declared that they dealt largely with the Colonial Company’s sugar and that the profit was practically nil. Ihe sugar duty was generally condemned. In contradiction of a witness the chairman declared that the evidence in North Queensland stated that the country was suitable for nothing hut sugar. Rice, cotton, dairying, -tc.. had been tried and had failed.
