THE ELECTRIC LIGHT POLL

LOST BY 248 VOTES. Only a bare half of the ratepayers qualified to vote exercised their franchise on the question of whether or not the Stratford Borough Council should take over plant, properties and interests of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company. Councillor Paget’s “bombshell” and the error in calculating the cost of the plant were generally considered to have settled the matter for the time being. There was, however, considerable anxiety on the part of some of the opponents of the scheme, that ratepayers might 1m disposed to regard the result as a foregone conclusion and would fail to record their disapproval of the scheme. The official result is as follows: For ... ... ... 62 Against 310 Informal ... ... 1 Majority against: 218. The result of the poll was announced about 7.20 o’clock last evening, there being little excitement on the part of the general public, though a few of those taking a lively interest in the affair turned up at the Borough Council Chambers. Mr P. Skoglund, Town Clerk, was in charge of the poll.
