STRIKES ON; THE BREAKWATER AT PATE A. SAFELY RUN ASHORE. At 10' o’clock yesterday morning, as the steamer Eapuni (CapLaii Macintosh) Avas entering Patea Harbour, she struck the end of the eastern breakwater.. The steamer Avas flying light, and there Avas a nasty cross sea with a westerly AA-ind. After the vessel struck she Avas headed up the river, and after travelling some 500 yards from the entrance, as the Avater Avas gaining and had then reached the' engine-room, Captain Macintosh deemed it advisable, so as not to block naAUgation, to run tlie \ r essel ashore, and she Avas .safely beached on the AA r estern side of the river. It Avas high Avater at the time, and the extent of the damage could not be ascertained.—HaAvera Star. . SALVAGE GEAR FORWARDED. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, February 20. NeAvs avas reached by the local agents of the Patea Shipping Company to-day that the Eapuni- Avas aground in the river at Patea. The vessel has taken in Avater, and it is stated she is not in a particularly safe position. The company shipped a centrifugal pump and other salvage gear to the vessel this afternoon.
