it is stated that Great .Britain’s firmness in securing the cancellation of the Japanese Joan at Nanking on the security of the Shanghai-Hung-kau railway, in which England has prior ’ rights, concentrates attention on persistent' Japanese financial activity in the Yangtse Valley, hence the loan of ton million 'taels on security of Chinese Merchants’ flee't may become a lever to diminish British interests, while the loan of twenty million taels on tlie security of the Haug-Yang ironworks gives Japan the foremost position in Hankow.
