E. T. Hooky has been sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. Hooloy’s defence uiged that the charges on Risely Hall were not ordinary mortgages, since they did not restrict his power to sell. Tie jury were Co minutes considering their verdict. Mr Justice Phillmoro agreed with the verdict, and said that Hooky was possibly not alone blameworthy for young Twecdale losing £127,000 in a yearQiiid a half and becoming liable for a further £IO,OOO. Nevertheless iho offence was serious enough to have had him sentenced in the second division. Hooley was unmoved, and did not reply. (Received 12, 1.5 p.m.) London, February 11.

Violet Charles w orth, sentenced on February 21st, 1910, to three years’ imprisonment for obtaining money by false pretences has been released. An agitation has .been caused in the Liverpool workhouse owing to the committe refusing to substitute foreign for homo killed meat and thus saving £IOOO annually. Tie committee alleged that the .shrinkage of imported meat in cooking made home killed meat cheaper. Tests, however, have shown .that homo killed loses 10-il ounces per ten pounds, chilled 17:, ounces and foreign meat 191 ounces. The a git ation continues.

Fred Laroso, a half-breed prospector, -and the discoverer of the famous Cobalt mines, has died in poverty. A terrible explosion, owing to a premature discharge of dynamite, wrecked the railway construction works on the Island of Rainy, fix Lake Ontario. The whole of the surrounding rock strata was uprooted. Thirteen men .were killed and six injured. The 'bodies were dreadfully mangled. The foreman was blown 110 feet. Washington, February 10.
