A BITTER CONTEST.
POWERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN STRUGGLE. Adelaide, February 11. Great interest is being taken in the elections, winch are chiefly being fought on the question of the powers of the Legislative Council. The returns are very incomplete. Present appearances point to the defeat of the Government by a slight majority. Mr Newland, Chairman of Committee, is practically certain to be defeated.
BADLY COMPILED ROLLS,:

■ Adelaide, February 12. The elections were bitterly contest ed.
The officials were greatly handicapped by badly-compiled rolls. Hundreds wore disfranchised, some being electors of long standing. In one electorate five voters found their names already marked through. The figures are still far from complete, but progress returns point to a liberal majority of s'x iu the Assembly The Socialists will probably gain two seats in the Council.
