CANADIAN TRADE.

PROPOSED GOVERNMENT TARIFF

COMMISSION

FULL SCOPE FOR ENQUIRY

(Received 10, 8.5 a.m.)

Ottawa, February 9. The Government plans a tariff comaiission. 1

It is explained that the Conimisaon’s duties include the gathering of information regarding the production transportation, and prices of goods at mine and abroad. Information may lie secured upon oath, with the right of inspection of books of any concern. Every effort will bo made to exclude politics from the Commission’s operition. Should the Government find that trusts exist in Canada the Commission will be ordered to report whether the remedy lies in a reduction of existing duties. The tariff relations with other countries will be specially studied.

The Liberals oppose the scheme as substituting government by commission for government by the people.
