“PERSIA MUST CO.”
In .a sort of valedictory cablegram to tho “New Vo •k American,” from Teheran, the plucky young American financier, Mr Shuster, says:—Two great Empires have decided that Persia must go. We shall see the deliberate garroting of an ancient nation, hut at least 1 trust .my countrymen to show their horror at the tragedy and to onregister it in the Book of M emory, lost we forgot it when we hear smooth words as to the hip aims of European civilisation and Christian Governments. I venture to prophesy that Europe is filling the cup of Islam’s bitterness, and the day of reckoning is not far distant. 1 know little of English politics, but if the volume of sympathy with Persia and indignation against English official policy, which reaches me, is any 1
indication, 1 believe the heart of England is sound, and that the statesman who retains control of Britain’s foreign policy—in defiance, as .1 understand it, of his own party—will be remembered as tlie First Enghsnman W'ao Forgot Asia.
