Lord Haldano, speaking at Gateshead and replying to Mr Bonar Law, said the later’s references to the obsolete weapons of the British Army was due to a casual remark of Lord Roberts’, ; who had no opportunity of ■studying at close quarters the new Howitzer, which .was the finest in the world, and the field gun was the bqst; except the French Territorial field gun, which was slightly heavic#, but for most purposes was as good as the German regular held gun. He hoped the new infantry rifle would prove the host in the world. The supply of horses had been greatly increased. The War Office was introducing changes in the mechanical transport department.
