Robert White, a middle-aged man, who for some time has been employed on the Wellington wharves, committed suicide about three o clock this afternoon by cutting Ins throat 'witlr'a! (razor at 26, Ghuznee street, where he was residing . . White was to have been married at the eiid of this month, but his fiancee 'broke ‘ off the engagement about • a fortnight ago. Since that-time deceased had’been very despondent ■iii ,y< : m ■ Blenheim, January. 4-1 i, A young married man, named v\ . Adamd, was picked up in a>semi-coh-condition on the pavement in front of Oxley’s Hotel at Picton, at three this morning. It appears he is a somnambulist and walked through an upper storey window, falling on the pavement below. His injuries are a broken leg, several bruises and shock. He was removed to the hospital and is progressing favourably. Christchurch, January 24. • An inquest touching the death of Thomas Ryan, who died from injuries caused by R. Blunden’s motor cai running into him in Cathedral Square on the night of January 19, was concluded to-day. The jury, after a retirement of 25 minutes, returned a verdict that deceased died as a result of injuries received by being knocked Jown by a motor car driven by one Blimden. . Dunedin, January 24. Henry Steele, belonging to an old and respected family in Arrqwtown district, met Iris death under distressing circumstances yesterday. He had been in bad health for some time, and is said to have been very depressed in spirits. On Monday, Constable Melville proceeded to Steele’s farm, near Lake Hayes, and was informed that Steele had fallen into the river, but had regained the land. On Tuesday, Steele acting in a peculiar manner, Constable Melville was again sent for. As lie was proceeding to the river, he saw Steele sitting on a bluff of rock about 30 feet high with a sheer drop into the river. Steele suddenly disappeared, and, on hastening to the spot, the constable saw Trim swimming in the river . and making frantic, efforts to get ashore. It was impossible to render assistance, and unfortunately the man soon disappeared. It is thought Steele slipped into th,e river while in the act of turning round.
