THE BIRTHDAY OF BURNS.
The gathering which is to be held in Stratford this evening in honour of Scotland’s national poet should ho ii notable one in the annals of Taranaki, and it is hoped the outcome of this “nicht wi’ Burns” may be the early formation of a Scottish Society. Such a Society might be formed with advantage as tending to preserve tho grand traditions of Caledonia in the hearts of her sons'who have adopted this new land or have been born of Scottish parents under its skies. Every true Scot is proud to claim Robert Burns as countryman, and by general consent the Ayrshire ploughman stands in the very first rank of the world’s lyric poets. In 1859 the centenary of his birth was celebrated in every land in which the British language is spoken with most unbounded enthusiasm. Scottish Societies flourish in every part of the Empire: in New Zealand there are several, and there is no valid reason why we should not have one here also.
