THE PROHIBITION VOTE. i (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, January 23. The consultative committee of the Prohibitionists hold a big meeting in Wellington on February 14th to decide what legislative action will be taken." According to Mr Dawson, general secretary, the no-license vote increased by twelve thousand compared with 1908. In 67 out of 76 licensing districts majorities were cast favouring national prohibition and in 13 licensing districts the three-fifths majority had been exceeded.

Wellington, January 22
George Armitage, a Burnham School boy, serving three years, and Arthur Thomas Reid, serving two years, both for breaking and entering, escaped from the Mount Cook prison gang this afternoon, but wore both captured before sundown. Reid was captured a few minutes after escaping, but Armitage remained at large for nearly three hours. Both submitted tamely when caught, offering no resistance.
A EIRE INQUIRY,
Timaru, January 22
A Magisterial inquiry was held today into the circumstances of the hie at John Edmond’s store on the evening of New Year’s Day, which destroyed or damaged six to seven thousand pounds’ worth of ironmongery stock. An open verdict was returned. The only evidence thathad a direct hearing on the question was that of H. G. Keith, a traveller fo~ the firm, and Hayes, shop assistant, who were in the store about half an hour before the fire was discovered. They both noticed on entering a slight smell of smouldering fire. They made an inspection of tin premises, but could detect nothing
RAILWAY THEFTS
Rotorua, January 22. For some time past complaints have been made of the thefts from the railway' premises of articles left in the carriages by forgetful passengers, and of packages from goods sheds. At the Magistrate’s Court, John Simpson, foreman platelayer, was fined £5, or in default one month’s imprisonment for stealing an umbrella from a carriage.
