FIGHT FOR SUPREMACY.

MARCONI AND TELEFUNKEN

The anouncement in the cable mes,?;fse of impending action by the Mar- - Coll j pom'pany against the Huddart ■ Parker Company and the New Zea- _ land Government for infringement of patent was not unexpected. The position was indicated editorially in the “Post’’ a few weeks ago under the heading The Wireless War.” Havf n, S absorfrod'|or suppressed, the minor I concerns on either side,' the Mar-: e coni Company and the Telefunken g ' Company have come to grips. It will be a fight for supremacy, as both systems are very powerfully ..entrenched the Marconi in England, the Telefunken in Germany. The feature of the Telefunken system is the “singing spark,” quite dis- ’ t motive in its way. The spark gap for discharging the primary circuit is in the Telefunken system a series arrangement, the spark proceeding from plate to plate in series, and seeming an effective damping of the electric waves. hi the Marconi system a rotary spark gap is used. The telefunken is really a combination of four systems, which wore originally exploited by two different companies —the Braun-Siemens and the SlabyArco. These interests were amalgamated into one powerful company to prosecute a more vigorous forward Policy, especially as the Marconi organisation threatened to dominate the whole wireless telegraphic world. So far as the German mercantile marine is concerned, the Marconi and Teleiunkon interests have been combined. There is naturally the keenest competition between the Gorman and Mar--oni interests to command the markets of the world, and while in England and over the North Atlantic the Marconi system is supreme, there promises to bo a titanic struggle in the newer world between the two interests J’or supremacy. To show that the Telefunken system is by no means a rival to be despised, it may be mentioned that two years ago there were no fewer than 673 stations fitted in operation with Telefunken apparatus, while during the last eighteen months 161 new stations have been opened. Although this total is exceeded by the Marconi Company, it suffices to show that the Telefunken system has become established very firmly. *lt has been adopted al-

most universally in the country of ils origin, and Russia uses it almost exclusively. The headquarters of the system are at Nauen, near Berlin, whore there is a wireless station with a range of between 2500 and 3125 miles, only exceeded by Poldhu, cape Cod, and Glace Bay stations of the Marconi systems. Interesting, in view of the Italian operations in Tripoli, is the Telefunken system operating between Dernah and Benghazi, now occupied by Italy, and Patara, on the coast of Asia Minor.
