Six certainties for the English tour have written to the Board of Control protesting against the appointment of a' secretary, and say they will not go unless allowed to appoint their own manager. They do not object to the Board’s appointee accompanying if the Board pays the expense. ENGLISHMEN AT BALLARAT.
Melbourne, January 19. The English cricketers commenced a match against Ballarat. Ballarat have lost two wickets for 140—M. Herring 93 not out, and L. Herring 30 not out being the chief scorers. (Received 20, 8.55 a.in.) Melbourne, January 20. Ballarat have lost nine wickets for 291—M. Herring 129, E. Herring 55.
NOBLE’S DECISION. Sydney, January 19. Noble gives his decision as to whether lie will play in the test matches on the 27h January. Discussing the Englishmen’s objection to resin. Noble declared that lie always used it for the fieldsmen; also that its use would not enable the ball to break more. It simply prevents the ball from slipping. The same advantage could be gained by rubbing the ball on the ground. Hopkins said the Australians used it ill England. He had never heard of any objection there.
PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH
Christchurch, January 19,
At a meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association to-night a letter was read from the Auckland Association to the effect that the dates originally fixed for the Plunket Shield match, Auckland v. Canterbury, February 9, 10, and 12, would, of course, be subject to alteration if Wellington defeated Canterbury. It was resolved to inform the Auckland Association that certain arrangements having been made, Canterbury was desirous that the original dates be adhered to, irrespective of the result of the Canter-bury-Wellington match. SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE. A preliminary meeting of representatives of sporting and athletic bodies was held-in Mr. E. P. Webster’s office fast night to .consider the advisability or otherwise of establishing a 'branch of\ the Sports Protection League, says uho “NEws.” There was an attendance of about twenty. ■ Mr. A. A. Paape, organising secretary for the Pominion," wa’s present, and gave a ll lengthy address, covering the aims and aspirations of the League. He po.ntacl out that the League was purely a defensive one; it would interfere with no one, but was out to endeavour to prevent its members being unduly interfered with, and was formed for the Bole purpose - of defending the sports and pastimes of the people. He stated chat they had met with a certain amount of opposition from a section of the community, who objected to amusement Us demoralising or extravag- ■ aht. He further explained away various misconceptions, regarding the League’s objects. It was not out for the purpose of the restitution of the bookmaker, for the multiplication of the number of racing days, hor for the extension of the totalisator outside of facing. He denied that they were out in. the interests of the liquor trade, or of any particular party in politics. \At the conclusion, so exhaustive had been the explanation, that everyone was satisfied, and though questions vero invited none were forthcoming. A resolution was carried unanimously that it was desirable to form a branch of the League in New Plymouth, and a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. A. N. Bewley. F. J. Hill, T. E. Avery, and E. P. Webster was appointed to make the necessary arrangements for a public meeting, at which Mr. Jas. McNaught, provincial secretary, will further explain the ob■ccts of the League.
