A STEAMER TURNS TURTLE

(Received 19, 8.5 a.m.) London, January 18

A gale in Groat Britain caused numerous fatalities and much damage to harbour works and shipping. A Gennan steamer was wrecked cn the Goodwins. The Uim gate lifeboat gallantly rescued twenty. A large unknown steamer was seen to turn turtle and founder off Petershead. There was a terrific gale, and it was impossible to help the crew.

There were other wrecks on all parts of the coast.

Snowfall in the Midlands lasted 36 'hmirs. Trains have been seriously delayed. Tons of salt were used for thawing purposes. The weight of ice coating the wires in •many localities dragged the telegraph polos down. Fifteen thousand miners have been thrown idle at Cannock Chase owing to the difficulty in moving railway trucks.

FIFTY-THREE DROWNED

A lifeboat followed - tho steamer Wistowhall for five hours. The tide was like a maelstrom and dashed the Wistowhall on Buller’s of Buchan Rocks. Four, including the captain, were saved. Fifty-throe, most- ' ly Lascars, were drowned.
