LATE LOCALS.

Mr. R. Spence (Spence and Stanford), who returned last night from a short visit to the West Coast and Christchurch, left for Wanganui tins afternoon, and will appear in a Llclsiug case there to-morrow. In view of the somewhat threatening state of the weather, Professor Cardston desires to assure parents that all children going to Eltham this evening will receive every care during the visit, and, on return‘to Stratford, will he seen safely home. We have to acknowledge receipt of a “taking” wall calendar from Messrs C. and E. Jackson, land and commission agents, Stratford, who assure readers that there is “Somethin’ doin’ at our house.” The death occurred early this morning, says a Palmerston Press Association telegram, of an old colonist, Mr. William Collingwood, father of Mr. W. H. Collingwood, Town Clerk. Deceased was 80 years of age, and lived for 25 years in Wanganui. About three years ago he came to reside with his son in Palmerston. There was a gathering of tlie clans last evening, when a number of Scottish gentlemen of Stratford, and the immediate neighbourhood, met to arrange for the Burns dinner to he hold at Stratford on January 25th. The chairman of the evening is to he Mr. William McLaughlin Kennedy, if he can attend. Vice-presidents were elected as follows:—Messrs. McLeod, 1). S. Glasgow, and A. F. Grant. Arrangements were also made for proposers and responders for the very formidable toast list, and for a host of matters of detail. It is expected that the diiinor will ho attended by fully a hundred gentlemen. The catering arrangements will he in the capable hands of Mr. Elder, who assures ns that it will he a “real Spotch dinner.”
