' \A meeting in Waitara last evening clocidod to take steps to raise subscriptions for th_o purpose of erecting a 'monument in the soldiers’ cemetery, on which it is proposed to be inscribed the names of members of the regular forces and* volunteers killed in engagements around the Waitara district in the war of 1860-1. It . has long been a reproach that the remains of brave men lie unmarked, and it is hoped now that the movement has been started that the cemetery will hereafter be properly cared for. Since the commencement of finer weather, shearing operations have been proceeding apace, and wool is coming into Waitara for transhipment Hon& in considerable quantity. The local freezing works arc busy, and there Is every appearance of the_ export season reaching fair proportions. It lias been decided to hold the annual Taranaki regatta on the Waitara river on Easter Monday, April Bth.
