A HOSTILE RECEPTION. (Por Press Assooiation:) Auckland, January 13. The “Star’s” correspondent at Rotorua 'states that no party of natives welcomed the Maori troupe of entertainers when the express arrived last night. The natives proceeded to Whakarowarcwa in a special bus. There a hostile demonstration which i proceeded from heated words to blows followed their arrival. In trying to protect Maggie Papakura from a blow oi-.e of the party had his arm broken in throe places, while old Meta Taupnpi had his head cut open with a stick. A general melee followed but no further serious casualties are reported. The feeling of hostility among the natives of Rotorua against the loaders who were responsible for the band journeying to England lias been steadily growing and culminated last even-
ing in the fracas, which was a distinctly unpleasant form of reception after a year’s absence. Roefton, January 13. James Wickon, injured last night by a fall of stone at the Progress mine, was brought into the hospital seriously injured.
