The Chamber of Commerce at Luton lias adopted a resolution protesting against Victoria attempting to secure skilled straw hat hands. THE COTTON TROUBLE. London, January 12. The Cotton Manufacturers’ Association deny they do not desire a settlement, but only ask, as non-com-batants in tho quarrel between unionists and non-unionists, that their financial interests should remain unaffected. THREATENED COAL STRIKE. (Received 13, 9.10 a.m.) London, January 12. Several of the miners’ leaders are urging a peaceful solution and a round-the-table conference. _ Many employers are willing to-give a minimum wage in abnormal places, but not a general minimum wage. Hundreds of men arc working day and night constructing a coal depot at Chatham dockyard for the storage of thirty thousand tons. SYDNEY WATERSIDERS. Sydney. January 12. Two more of the Adelaide Company’s steamers are idle, as a protest against the working of constant hands. COOKS AND STEWARDS. Wellington, January 12. An agreement on practically all points was reached in the cooks’ and stewards’ dispute before the Conciliation Council. It was agreed that the minimum wages shall bo; Chief stewards £lO per mouth, chief cooks £lO, cook-steward with assistant £lO. cookstewards without assistant £ll 10s, assistants £4 10s; overtime rates Is par hour. NAPIER WATERSIDERS. Napier, January 13. A conference between the waterside workers and the employers sat all day yesterday considering the men’s demands. Ultimately a sub-commit-tee from each side was appointed to frame recommendations to be submitted to a general meeting next week.
