ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
(Per Press Association,) Christchurch, January 11; About 4.35 a.m, to-day, ; Mr. Harry Bowley, a Customs officer, om the wharves at Lyttelton, poticed itile oody of a man • floating in the water •about 20 feet inside of ’the'’east, side of No. 6 wharf. He communicated with the police, and the.body, was recovered. The face was all eaten away s by fish, and the body,.appeared to have been in ‘the water about a -week, ft appeared to be that of a middleaged man, of medium build, about sft dm in ho.ght, with brown hair. The oody was clothed in a green jersey, and blue trousers and elastic-sided hoots. In the pqckets i.werg Jcfqund st two £1 notes, 5s 6d in silverand a pocket-knife. Acting-Detective' Carney identified the 1 body as that of a seaman named Campbell, belonging to the steamer Wakatu, who was missing last Thursday, 4th iilst. Detective Carney was speaking to him that night, and he appeared to all well. He was then wear ng a coat, which lias since been found in a right-of-way off Norwich Quay. There were no marks of violence about the body, and it appeared as if the man had fallen into tae water from one of the wharves and was drowned.
