SHORT-WETC HT BREAD, (Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 8. Throe bakers were lined 40s. each to-day for soiling short-weight bread. The excuse was that not enough margin was allowed for evaporation. One defendant said it was not a fair deal that one loaf should be selected and that if the whole batch were weighed it would not be found to bo shortweight. SLY-GROGGERS SENTENCED. Wellington, January 8. Horace Jeyes was sentenced to one months’ imprisonment, sentences to be concurrent, on two charges of slygrog selling. Accused had been previously convicted. Thomas Elliot was lined £ls for a similar offence or 21 days’ imprisonment. ALLEGED ARSON. Auckland, January 8. In connection with the fire in Green Lane on October 25th, when a house and stable owned by Robert Porter were found afire in several places, the coroner’s jury returned a verdict that a wilful attempt to set fire to both was made by Porter.
