JACK JOHNSON.
“RETIRED FOR EVER.”
Johnson, is like some famoxis operatic stars, Flo has a habit of appearing for “positively the last time.” The I'oliowingT.ctter contains a resolve never to e'htej - the ring again, but apparently Mr. Mclntosh has made a sufficiently tempting offer. Johnson, writing to;a friend in New York, said:— "Justb few lines to give you a real 'dope, I noticed in your paper a few days ago a great headline ‘Jack Johnson was Broke.’ That’s the reason I’m retiring from active service. Does this, appear.,like a man who is broke? l ean writs'll*cheque any day in the week; fo.r l(XJ,000dol. Besides that I have property in the way of automobiles and jewellery. 1 value my cars at 20,000d01., and jewellery at 60,000d01., and 1 have a few thousand in my pocket. Outside of that I’m kind of shy? Now a. few words about the Johnson-Wells fight. When I came over here to London I only intended to book a few weeks in the musichalls. I got booked up for about twenty weeks, and during that period of time one James White induced me to cancel my theatrical engagements, and James White declared he would give n)e|,;30,000dol. to box Bombadier \Veljs, win, lose or draw. So he put pp 10,000dol. with the ‘London Sportsman,’ a daily paper, and I, being on old;Fox, drew ToOOdol. of the money that was put up with the ‘Sportsman,’ and to be paid over to Jack iohnsjon.. and Bombadier Wells—three-fourths-avas to be given to Jack Johnsoh and one-fourth to Wells. I drew my' share, ’and the fight failed to take place'.' Now one James White has brought suit against Jack Johnson for 25,000d0L, winch he cannot get. Just had an offer to box Langford in the States. I don’t know whether it is genuine or not; but, nevertheless, I nave retired for once and always. It would not make any difference if they offered me 90,000dol; I shall never fight in the ring again.”
