TRAIN FATALITY.
MAN AND WOMAN KILLED. (Per Press Association.) Thames, January 7. A shocking accident occurred, on Saturday night on the Kauaranga river railway bridge, i:i,ir Thames. Upon arrival at Thames of the 9.20 train, the driver was making his usual examination of the engine, when he discovered a man’s cap on the front portion. Blood stains, hair and pieces of flesh proved beyond a doubt that a fatality had occurred. The police were communicated with, and a search commenced. The awful discovery was made that two poisons had met their death with startling suddenness. The body of Walter Miller, aged 96, a local carrier, was found in the river, while the body of a half-caste native woman, named To Pore, aged ■lO years, was found on the bridge, terribly mutilated. The man was found near the river bank, and the woman on a sleeper some distance from the bank. Exactly how the fatality occurred is a mystery. The engine driver did not feel a hump, and though he kept a good look out he saw no one. The presumption is that the couple, not knowing of the holiday change in the trains, thought that the last train had passed, and after crossing the bridge sat down, had some lish and beer, and went.to sleep.
