On the strength of London reports the wheat market is firmer and sales have been made at a halfpenny advance. THE PRICE OF SILVER. (Received G, 11.10 a.m.) London, January 5. Silver, 2u^d. CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, January 5. The third wool sale of this season’s series was held to-day before a very large attendance of buyers, representing all sections of the trade. There were 15,1U2 bales catalogued, a falling off of 4GUU bales as compared with the January sale of last year. This shortage was due to the wet weather delaying shearing during last month. Tne wool was not in quite such good condition as a month ago, tiie rain having taken a lot of tne brightness out of it, and a good many lots showed signs of dampness. 'There was again exceptionally urisk compeiit.on, especially between Continental and Home sections of the trade. American buyers were not so much in evidence as at the previous sale. Dunedin woollen mills and local fellmongers purchased a fair quantity as compared with previous sale. Fine and medium halfbreds were firmer by a farthing to a halfpenny per lb., and medium p : eces also sold better. There was a Getter selection of merinos offered than at previous sale, and they sold well. All other classes of wool were fully equal in values to those ruling at the December sale, and the number of lots passed in was again comparatively small. The range of prices during the forenoon was .- —Merinos, B}d to 12d: halfbred, to 12Jd; Corriedale, 9d to 13d; threequarterbred, 7fd to lljd; vrossbred, 7d to 11R1; longwool, 7jjd to Bjd; down wool, Bfd to lORl; merino pieces, Ski to lO^d; halfbred pieces, Gd to lid; crossbred pieces, s}d to B^d; locks and crutclnngs, 3id to 7-4 - The highest priced cl’ps were as follows:—Je over'Rydal, down Corriedale, 13d; Rakahuri, Corriedale, 123 d; M.A., halfbred, 12£d; fc, over three stars, halfbred, 12fd; fx over coat of arms, halfbred, 12^d; D Anaflia, halfbred, 12d; P., merino, 12d; D.D., conjoined, halfbred, 12d; P.T., halfbred, 12d; Waitohi Downs, halfbred, 13d; Shades, halfbred, 12d.
