Jackson, Hugh Good, E. Glasgow, W. P. Kirkwood, D. J. Malone, J. F. Watson, J. Stanford; Handicapper ’ J. E. Henrys; Clerk of Scales, C. J). Sole: Clerk of Course, A. J. Davcy; Timekeeper, J. F. Watson; Judge, J. R. L. Sandford; Starter, H. Thompson; Hon. Treasurer, S. Pitt; Secretary, J. R. Mackay; Acting-Secretary, G. D. Hunter. SECOND DAY. Beyond question the annual meeting of the Stratford Racing Club has been a decided success. yesterday's rain is to be regretted, as it spoiled the day for the ladies and made things generally uncomfortable for the public. However, the afternoon cleared up well, and before the day was out the sun had conquered tne light, drifting rain of the morning. During the second day £B4ll was put through the totalisator. This amount is £l2Ol more than was put through on the second day at last race meeting, and would have been much larger if one race had not been reduced to a field of three starters. The total for the meeting, put through the machines, was £18,523; while" last year the 1 sum was £14,625 10s. ' Mr. J. Chadwick’s excellent handicapping produced some close finishes. As a general r.ule, punters had tiie strength of the field nicely, but they were *all astray in the Cardiff Stakes when Draft and Royal Dragoon paid handsome dividends. The racing on the wnole was excellent, Mr. Chadwick’s adjustments puzzling backers considerably. Doubtless the heavy state of the course owin<r to the rain had also something to do~ with 1 the fact that light-weights had the best of it all day, and pr.cos paid were above the average. Mr. A. Hall’s win in the Comity Hack race, with St. Gate’(making that owner’s third success at the meeting) was a popular one, and the public later on simply rushed St. Bill in the Ngaere Handicap, the only other starters being Red Lupin and Overtime. Here, however, the unexpected happened, for the son' of Lupin and Porangi, who has ’ somfe'* remarkably good performances to h : s credit, proved 100 good for the favourite at a difference in weights of nearly three stone, and cantered in three lengths to the good, with the Wanganui-owned Overtime a similar distance behind St._ Bill. The victory was almost sensational, and was received with mixed feelings by the crowd. The Cardiff Stakes prov-
od a great battle, two Stratford horses —G. Smith’s Draft and C. Rnscoo’s Royal Dragoon—finishing first and second and 'returning prices that made fortunate backers highly pleased with themselves. The principal open race—the Dominion Handicap—proved another big surprise'for packers, the light-weighted and ’previously disappointing . Minora' 1 landing the stake from Te Roti by'the very narrowest margin’. In this rhce. the’start 1 was spoiled by hAlf the horses 'getting caught in ~|he'tapes at'the" release of the Iplrri'er,' and was one' of the iaw) occasions; An vvhich Mr; Thompson'did not ge!j' his horses; 'away- * in : perfect line. 1 ' Monsieur Soult and St. Prior were offered for sale " by auction, but wore passed in. The Racirtg. The second day’s sport opened with the County Hack Handicap, for winch, there were six starters. St. Gate took the lead from the tape, and \%aa never headed*.. though , at the , gate Mortite.; made, a good effort, tailing off at the home turn. Avaunce and St. Luap made a good finish for second place, the former obtaining the verdict by half a length. Muleteer was never 'in’ the running and finished last. Rain set in before the horses got away in’ the Cardiff Stakes. However, it was a fine fighting race, with a good finish. St. Helena, who appeared to have the best of things, gave way to Draft who was battling hard, and then lost the second place when challenged by Royal Dragoon. Both horses paid a royal dividend. The Dominion Handicap produced one false start, and the horses finally got away badly. Te Roti, Sandy Paul, Smilax was the order at the caretaker’s cottage. At gate Minora was lying second to Te iioti with Sandy Paul third. The two leaders then had “a‘ding dong go” and at the distance were level. Minora passed the box a neck to the good from Te Roti with Sandy Paul two lengths away. The Makuri Hurdles produced a fine spectacular race. The winner, Darby Paul, hit hard at the hurdles in front of the stand, hut made a good recovery. Rawinia and Brilliancy were first away, with Jackman third. Coming into the straight, Brilliancy led, a length clear of Jackman. At the caretaker’s cottage Ambergris led from Brilliancy with Allwar third. Rounding the back turn) Darby Paid set sail after Ambergris and turning for homo was slightly in front, increasing the lead at the post to a length, with four lengths between Ambergris and Clemency. Six horses saddled up for the Ladies’ Purse Handicap. Draft was first out, hut was soon headed by Clemocs and at the gate Clemocs was still leading from Draft. Brown Star dropped hack at the far turn. Clomoes and Moahau wore in front of Draft at the turn, the first-named getting the verdict by two lengths, with a length between Moahau and Draft. But three horses contested the Ngaire Handicap and the favourite, St. Bill, after doing all the loading, was headed by Red Lupin at the home turn, who won comfortably. Overtime was out of it all the way. In the Stratford Hack Handicap, Ngatiruanui would have been a hotter favourite if punters had been sure that he would not get left. As it was, he got away in a good position and lead the field all the way. Glegfern on the inside railing coming into the straight for a time looked a winner, hut died away, finishing third to Bow Bells, who was two lengths behind the favourite . The Toko Welter Hack Handicap brought out six starters. Cornelian ■ was first out, followed by Dover Straits and Moahau. The favourite was last. At the Caretaker’s Cottage Cornelian was still in front, with Dover Straits close handy. At the pate Dover Straits, Glen Tullock . ml Cornelian were hunched, hut at the tin oo furlongs Glen Tullock led. Moahau was in front coming into the straight, and held the advantage, winning easily by four lengths from Dover Straits, wan had caught Glen Tullock at the last turn. Details.
