BUSINESS PORTION OF A TOWN SWEPT.

TEN BUILDINGS CONSUMED

Sydney, December 28. Five destroyed the business portion of Narrabri West.

Three hotels and seven business premises were burned. There is no water supply, and there were several narrow 'escapes from death by burning. The damage is estimated at £20,000.

FLAMES SPREAD WITH GREAT RAPIDITY. NO FIRE-FIGHTING APPARATUS. (Received 29, 9.10 a.m.) Sydney, December 29. The fire spread with great rapidity. Most of the buildings were weatherboard. No fire-fighting apparatus was available, and the water supply was poor. The residents were compelled to stand practically idle and watch the blaze. The whole of the chief business block was destroyed. Many occupants lost everything but their night attire. Twenty thousand pounds is a low estimate of the "damage.
