Napier, December 27. At the chess congress in the first round. Mason beat James, Grierson beat Miles, Connell beat Jourdain, Gyles beat Sainsbury, Severn© beat Jones. TIIO game between Hicks and IvoJling was unfinished when the second draw was made, and was adjourned till Saturday. , „ . . , In the second round Grierson beat Sainsbury, and Gyles beat Connell. The following games were unfinished when the evening session closed: — James v. Kelling, Mason v. Hicks, Milos v. Severn©, Jourdain v. Jones.
