Hamilton, December 27. Wallace t'idsloy was fatally shot at Rototuna, in tne stomach. He was aged 17. '1 no accident occurred while rabbiting, and the shot was self-in-dicted. Napier, December 27. The chess congress opened this morning, the competitors being welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. J. V. Drown, M.P.). The draw for the first round is as follows:—Mason (Wellington) v. Jourdain (Napier), Sainsbury (Gisborne) v. Gyles (Westport). Gisborne, December 27. An elderly woman named Adelia Hastings was found dead in a chair in her house early on Sunday morning. At the subsequent inquest medical testimony, after a post-mortem examination, was that death was due to heart disease, accelerated by indulgence in alcoholic liquors. A verdict v. as returned accordinglyWellington, December 27. The body of Cyril Aston, aged 27, who had been missing since December 7, was found at Karori yesterday, with a bullet wound in his head. At an inquest to-day a verdict was returned that he died from a bullet wound, but there was no evidence to show iiow it was inflicted. An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of Mary Burnip, a middle-aged woman, who was found dead on Monday morning in Francis Place. The evidence showed deceased was drunk and was put out of the house by the other occupants. She lay down in an outhouse, and in the morning was found dead in the kitchen. Dr Fyffe, who conducted the post-mor-tem, said 'death was due to hemorrhage, probably brought on by alcohol. The coroner entered a verdict accordingly. Bruno O’Moller, a middle-aged man, was charged at the Police Court this morning with having broken and entered the premises of Hash and Gooder, wholesale jewellers, during the early hours of this morning, and stolen jewellery valued at £27. O’Moller was caught in the building by tne police. Tie was remanded till January 2. Dunedin, December 27. At tlio inquest on the body of Miss Gumming, aged 83 years of age,; who died at Mornington on Saturday, a verdict was returned that death was due to sudden heart failure, the result of acute pneumonia and senile de--1 cay. i James Mehalski, who was admitted to the hospital on the 7th inst., suffering from a spinal injury, as the result of aii accident in the Gatlins district, died in the institution yesterday. The: police are now making enquiries regarding the accident, with a view to holding an inquest. : ; ;i InVercargiil, December 27. Jeannie Duucayi, figed 10, died, in i the hospital as a result of burns on Christmas Day. While standing at the fireside her clothes caught, and she ran outside enveloped in flames, and was suffering from extensive injuries before they were extinguished.
