In a temperature of 100 degrees the trial opened in October of two beautiful guns Aliss ijiliaii Graham and Aliss iMiici Conrad, who are accused of attempting to murder Air. William .Earl I )ouge Stokes, a well-known New York millionaire. Mr. Stokes escaped from a remarkable encounter in Miss Conrad’s rooms witli two bullet wounds.
Tiie fair prisoners laughed gaily as gazing straight at them, the millionaire gave ms remarkaole testimony oeginaing his recital by saying that Aliss Conrad one day last month telephoned to him asking him to call on her and get some letters lie had written to Aj.iss Graham, who, she said, had just sailed for Europe in the Baltic.
“I went,” Air. Stokes proceeded, ‘‘and was received by Miss Conrad, who showed me into the drawing-room A minute later Alis Graham GLIDED INTO THE DRAWINGROOM.
with a revolver behind her back and vehemently accused me of circulating derogatory tales concerning her. ‘‘No one knows yon are here,” the girl exclaimed. ‘‘We two are witness's against yon, and behind the wall are three men witnesses who can see every thing you do and hear everything you say. Many prominent New Yorkers as well known as you have disappeared and no one has gone to goal for it. We have made all arrangements to get rid of you.”
Air. Stokes then declared that the girls commanded him to sit at the table and write a retraction of what they alleged he had said about them, and to sign a cheque for £SOOO. ‘‘lt’s death or £5000,” Miss Conrad cried.
‘‘lf it’s death or one cent,” Mr Stokes replied.
“I CHOOSE DEATH.” Aliss Graham fired and hit Mr. Stokes in the leg. He described how he grappled with the girls and succeeded in w resting away aMiss Graham’s revolver as the weapon went off a second time, inflicting a wound in the hand, which he exhibited.
The prisoners smiled broadly as Air. Stokes narrated ’hmV Aliss Conrad fired several shots and finally threw the revolver behind the sofa. He escaped from the room with both girls hanging to his neck and heating him. Afterwards three Japanese assaulted him outside. He was taken to the hospital where he rejnained for ten days.
The case was adjourned. Recently the young ladies were acquitted.
